Job Opportunities for Disabled American Veterans

The Dream Society

About two years ago I got a job at a very well known non-profit organization for people with disabilities.  Just out of college I thought I had landed my dream job, however, about two months after starting I realized it wasn’t. As a person with a disability it’s difficult to find a job, even with a college degree, so I tried to keep my job as long as possible.

After almost a year and a half of hating my job, I got “laid off” as they put it. In my opinion being “laid off” is one of the most disturbing things that can occur in life. I was devastated for over a year. With no direction, and horribly depressed I went on interviews. Of course they didn’t hire me.

In June of 2006, my husband and I moved back to my hometown. I’ve always known I needed to do something great with my life. I love helping people, even if they don’t ask for my help. So, I took my knowledge and life experiences and combined them to create a non-profit organization for people with physical challenges called the Dream Society.

The programs of the Dream Society were very much created out of my personal experiences. Our program called Dream Helpers was created out of my need for an assistant to assist me in the workplace. Most people don’t realize that as a key component to achieving the goal of employment for someone with a physical impairment, however, it really is. The dream of working can be very costly for someone with a physical challenge due to this needed expense. It is very costly to pay someone to be with you 8-10 hours a day.

All of our programs come from my life experiences, and my hope is to help other people with physical challenges to never have to go through the many different life obstacles that I have. I would like the Dream Society to be the standard for people with physical challenges. We deserve better than what the world now offers us. We should all enjoy the opportunities afforded to people without challenges.

The Dream Society is only three months old, and I have high hopes. Unfortunately, my high hopes and our current funding don’t coincide. My hope is to someday develop a universal housing community, and also an adult day care center. These two projects could help many people achieve the dream of independence.

If you would like more information on our programs and how you can help us achieve our many goals of assisting others, please visit our website at www.thedreamsociety.org. We look forward to hearing from anyone who believes in our mission as much as we do. Thank you in advance.
